WHO WE ARE

Since 2013, Exhale to Inhale has empowered over 3,000 survivors through the healing practice of trauma-informed yoga. Our trauma-informed approach helps survivors reconnect with their own bodies and inherent strength so they can better navigate the challenges they are experiencing.

In 2019 we taught over 400 classes and served over 650 clients. Although we currently reside in a digital space, as soon as we’re able, we will return to bring yoga to staff and survivors at local shelters and community centers.

  • $50 pays for one trauma-informed yoga class for survivors
  • $100 provides one, 4-hour trauma-informed yoga training for a yoga professional
  • $300 covers the cost of a 6-week yoga program at a shelter/community center
  • $600 covers the cost of a 12-week yoga program at a shelter/community center
  • $1,000 sponsors one year of appreciation events for our volunteer yoga teachers
  • $1,800 sponsors on year of trauma-informed yoga classes at a shelter/community center

WHY THIS WORK MATTERS

Trauma is an experience whose residual imprint can remain in the mind and body long after the initial incident has occurred. Research has proven that yoga can serve as a therapeutic tool for survivors. Through the practice, survivor can reconnect to and bolster inner strength as they continue to cope with the long-lasting impacts of trauma.

YOGA WORKS, YOGA HEALS

In addition to first-hand testimonials, we conducted surveys with the New School for Social Research to measure stress, bodily pain, and sense of agency before and after an Exhale to Inhale class. Results showed statistically significant improvement across each wellness indicator.

“Your yoga teachers helped me feel ok in my body again and helped me understand that traditional yoga classes sometimes put my body into positions that triggered reminders of sexual violence and extreme vulnerability. I just finished my daily yoga practice at home and suddenly wanted to express my gratitude for being able to participate in a trauma sensitive yoga program and reconnect with my own body in a safe and gentle way.”

“I can’t emphasize strongly enough how this program helped me begin to feel safe in my body...”
